Choosing a character for 11th Hazard

Despite GURPS allowing almost any kind of character to be built within its system not all characters will work well within the setting of 11th Hazard, or at least may be ill suited for early arrival in the game.

As such, please take the following into consideration when choosing your character:

Did you check the basics? Is the character available? Do you have a free character slot? Does their canon still have free slots?

Will the character be dead weight that others will have to shoulder? Think about it, will the character you are thinking of applying provide any useful skills or abilities to help offset the extra “weight” others will have to shoulder? If not, forget about them. There are exceptions to this, but you need to contact the mods first. Such characters may have worked in other games, but not here.

Examples include: Most Vocaloids, and many “damsels in distress”.

LET ME BE CLEAR: Characters who posses no exceptional combat abilities, but do have other skills that would be of great use are not “dead weight” characters. Only those that have neither are considered so.

About exceptions: Sometimes a “dead weight” character can provide moral support for the group or comfort when things are rough. A few may be allowed in with mod approval. They will not count against either character cap nor do they have to worry about activity. But, should they start turning this game into a slice of life drama, a gruesome fate may await them.

Are you okay with bringing your character into such a grim and dark setting? Are you okay with poor Cardcaptor Sakura seeing her friends ripped apart and eaten by monsters? Are you okay with her being ripped apart herself? If you are, then fine. Remember though, the Mods and GMs will not hold back just because you have a cute and innocent character. They are just as much at risk as the grizzled war veteran, if not more.

Don't let that discourage you from applying for characters like Sakura. Just be sure you understand the environment you are bringing them into.

Does your character's powers or abilities rely on their setting to function or be relevant? Examples include: Alchemy from Full Metal Alchemist, magic from Final Fantasy 7, the Force from Star Wars, and some of the magic from Slayers. In each of these situations, powers come from a source with in that world, and is cut off upon arrival in 11th Hazard. It may be possible to find an alternative source for their abilities later, but don't count on it too much.

Examples of characters who's abilities and skills are worthless outside of their setting would be: Yugioh, .Hack, Sword Art Online, and Beyblade. Many of these characters would be considered “Dead Weight” characters as a result.

Does your character rely on a large vehicle or robot? Mecha pilots, and the like, will be without their signature equipment until they have saved up enough character points to “buy” their gear back. If they are particularly helpless without their equipment it might be better to wait until later in the game to bring them in.

Is your character giant, a giant robot, or something extremely divergent from a human? You might not be able to bring them in right away, or they may be so crippled, skill and ability-wise, that they can barely function normally. Such characters will work better down the line, but if you are determined, (and being determined to play a character is a good thing in 11th Hazard) contact a mod to see if something couldn't be worked out.

Does your character have any unique needs? Energon? Medicine? Plutonium? Once again, talk to a mod to see if something couldn't be worked out.

Does your character have partner characters? They may or may not come along. At this moment, there is currently a very basic system in place for pokemon or digimon partner characters. All Partner characters share the same character point pool as the player character.

Finally, there aren't any canon updates. Once a character is in the game, they are stuck at that point in the canon they arrived from. Make sure the version of the character you are applying is the one you want for the long haul.
